TitleSummer Camp Positions based on the book Cuando los grandes eran pequeños
SummaryStudents are presented with the following scenario:

You are a volunteer with the educational committee for a prestigious summer camp in your town. You are reviewing some documents (one of the books in the collection Cuando los grandes eran pequeños) that will help the committee make decisions on how to fill up some vacant positions with the best person available.

Students work in pairs or small groups and recommend to whom they would offer the available positions and why based on the evidence in the books.

Cuando los grandes eran pequeños is a collection of books written as poems illustrating famous people from Spanish-speaking countries.
What are my learning targets?I can…
-Describe a person and his / her life from reading poetry
-Give my opinion on why I think a person should be hired for a specific summer camp position
What is my essential question?
How can I compare the characters and events in poems to real life situations?
How does literature mirror life?
What is the input /resource?Cuando los grandes eran pequeños
How do we build background knowledge? How do we activate prior knowledge?-Students use Post-it notes to write down qualities of Summer Camp professionals based on their experiences or other sources of information, such as books, movies, shows.
-Students make a web with the Post-it notes and explain why they chose those connections
What is my introduction to this lesson?
-Students in pairs or small groups choose a book from the collection Cuando los grandes eran pequeños
How do I want my students to process this input?Given the following scenario, students in their small groups will read the chosen book. They will analyze, and apply critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills to achieve the objective of recommending the best person for each position based on the evidence in the book they read.

Scenario:You are a volunteer with the educational committee for a prestigious summer camp in your town. You are reviewing some documents (the book) that will help the committee make decisions on how to fill up some vacant positions with the best person available. The positions to be filled are:
-Science teacher
-Drama teacher
-Art teacher
-English teacher
-French teacher
-Spanish teacher

When the educational committee meets again to decide to whom they are going to offer the available positions, you should be ready to defend your case
-by giving a short biography of the person assigned to you and
-by suggesting in writing which person you highly recommend for that position and why
How could we reflect upon our learning?-Students will reflect on the experience by adding Post-it notes to the web created at the beginning of the project
What extension activities could be done?-Students can choose one or two verses from the book and memorize them. Then they can recite them using Flipgrid.
-(Optional) Students can use props to set the stage of time and place of the verses chosen.
