A reflection on the mistakes children may make while learning their heritage language and how these are part of their learning journey between two languages. A look at the richness of growing up, learning and communicating across languages.
When Mistakes Tell a Story
Children growing up between two languages
When a child grows up between two languages, learning to write in their heritage language can be a journey full of discoveries… and mistakes.
Children learning Spanish as a heritage language may make spelling mistakes, write some words as they hear them, mix both languages in the same sentence, transfer structures from one language to another, or allow the language they
use most frequently to influence their writing.
These mistakes should not be seen simply as something that needs to be corrected. They can provide valuable clues about how children are developing their linguistic knowledge and about the complex process of learning and using two languages.
Because behind a misspelled word, a sentence in which two languages are mixed, or an expression that does not quite belong to either language, there may be much more than a mistake.
There may be a story between two languages.
